Susan Funkenstein is an interdisciplinary scholar working at the intersections of art history, design history, dance history, German studies, gender studies, and popular culture studies. Her book, Marking Modern Movement: Dance and Gender in the Visual Imagery of the Weimar Republic, was published in 2020 by the University of Michigan Press in its Social History, Popular Culture, and Politics in Germany Series, a showcase for interdisciplinary scholarship in German Studies.

Susan has also published on depictions of dance in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including Modernism/Modernity, German Studies Review, Women in German Yearbook (now Feminist German Studies), Gender & History, and Women's Art Journal. Essays on dancing at the Bauhaus have appeared in Bauhaus Bodies: Gender, Sexuality, and Body Culture in Modernism's Legendary Art School (2019) and New German Dance Studies (2012).
