About the Gallery

Established with the generous support of alumna Penny W. Stamps (1944-2018), the Stamps Gallery is a dynamic center for contemporary art and design, located in downtown Ann Arbor.

Part of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, it opened in 2017 after years of being located in disparate campus spaces. Building on the school’s strong tradition of excellence, thought leadership and community engagement, our goal is to develop innovative and scholarly exhibitions, publications and public programs that foster vibrant and inclusive platforms for presentation, discussion and inquiry into the urgent questions and concerns of our time. We are a non-collecting institution — functioning in the Kunsthalle tradition — committed to deepening the understanding of contemporary art and design practices that spark action and conversation.

Vision

Stamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. We play a leadership role at the University of Michigan and the global art community through exhibitions, publications and public programs that are lively, experimental and inclusive. A commitment to social justice shapes our work, developing exhibitions, programs, and publications that inspire new ways of looking, making, and thinking.

Stamps Gallery Receives Andy Warhol Foundation Grant

In January 2020, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts announced that Stamps Gallery in downtown Ann Arbor will be the recipient of an $80K grant to support public exhibitions, public programs, and publications dedicated to exploring inclusive, equitable futures through the lens of contemporary art practice.

Honoring Penny W. Stamps

Design professional, arts advocate, philanthropist, and friend Penny W. Stamps dedicated herself to elevating opportunities for the culture-makers of tomorrow. In 2012, the U‑M Board Regents named the School of Art & Design in her honor, creating the Penny W. of Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan. In addition to the Stamps Gallery, the Penny Stamps Speaker Series and Stamps Creative Work Awards are also named in her honor.
