Our virtual and in-person programs are offered to current high school students (grades 9 – 12) interested in building new skills for their creative pursuits and learning more about the Stamps School of Art & Design.

Drawing for Artists & Designers (Virtual)
Virtual Studio for grades 9-12
The ability to draw is essential for all practicing artists and designers. For this reason, Stamps requires applicants to include two design or observational drawings in their undergraduate portfolio.
In Drawing for Artists & Designers, students will learn drawing concepts fundamental to contemporary art and design practice. Students will gain knowledge and experience in a variety of approaches, ranging from observational to experimental drawing. Each class session is structured as studio time, giving students ample opportunity to build their drawing skills and apply new concepts. Lectures, demonstrations and slides will enhance covered material.
Drawing for Artists & Designers meets online Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 - 5:30pm ET for a total of eight sessions.Dates

Cost
Participation in Drawing for Artists & Designers costs $245. This program fee includes instructional materials. A non-refundable $50 drop fee is also included in this program fee.

4D Animation (Virtual)
Virtual Studio for grades 9-12
4D Animation is an online class introducing students to techniques used by artists and designers when working creatively with the fourth dimension, time. Students will learn the fundamentals of working with time by exploring basic audio, video and animation techniques that can easily be used at home to make creative work. This online class is designed to introduce content synchronously and asynchronously. This format will give students opportunities to get direct feedback from their instructor and time to build their skills and to apply new concepts. Lectures, demonstrations and slides will enhance covered material.
4D Animation meets online Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-7:00pm ET for a total of eight sessions.

Students will gain experience using this material to explore composition, color and working from direct observation. Drawing at the Museum: Saturdays @ UMMA (In Person)
In-Person Event for grades 9-12
Join us at the museum! In our Drawing at the Museum program, students will spend an afternoon at the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA) and develop their observational drawing skills using the U-M’s world-class art collection.
Stamps requires applicants to include two design or observational drawings in their undergraduate portfolio. In this afternoon program, participants will have an opportunity to sharpen fundamental drawing skills in the galleries of the museum. Drawing time will be followed by a guided tour of the museum’s recently opened exhibitions. This program will not only help participants to improve their drawing skills, but to understand how the UMMA is an invaluable resource that enriches the Stamps student experience.Drawing at the Museum sessions will take place on Saturday, October 15, and Saturday, October 29, 2022 from 1:00pm-3:30pm ET. This class will meet in-person at the University of Michigan Museum of Art.

Art as Activism: Stamps Gallery Workshop (In-Person)
In-Person Event for grades 9-12
How can art be a powerful tool for social justice? In our Art as Activism: Stamps Gallery Workshop, participants will explore how art can give voice to the most important issues of our time.
This program is centered on the fall exhibition LaToya Ruby Frazier: Flint Is Family In Three Acts. This exhibition brings together a series of photographs produced by the artist LaToya Ruby Frazier. Frazier spent 5 years working with residents of Flint, MI as they endured one of the most devastating water crises in US history from 2016-2021.
Stamps Gallery staff will introduce participants to Frazier’s Flint Is Family project as well as to broader vision for this exhibition. Through discussion and collaborative exercises, students will learn how to lead critical conversations about activist art. With guidance from Gallery and Pre-College staff, participants will also reflect on how they can convey important messages through their own creative work.

Application Prep (Virtual)
Virtual Workshop Series for grades 9-12
Let’s get your application ready! Application Prep is a series of virtual workshops led by the Stamps Admissions team. This program is designed to introduce students to Stamps’ Admissions standards, focusing on a variety of topics including: personal essays, portfolio preparation and overall application strategy.
In Application Prep, Admissions team members will walk participants through the important elements of application preparation. These workshops will help students feel confident as they press “submit” on their college application and offer strategies for how they can showcase their best work and unique perspective.
Application Prep meets online Wednesdays from 5:00-6:00pm ET for a total of four sessions.

Career Connections: Stamps Alumni Panel (Virtual)
Virtual Event for Parents and Students, grades 9-12
You’re a parent with a talented student who has their heart set on applying to art school. The only problem is that you aren’t quite sure how they might use a college degree to pursue a successful career in art & design. Join us for a panel discussion with recent Stamps alums who will answer the question: Where are they now?
In this panel discussion, recent Stamps graduates will discuss their creative careers and how Stamps helped to prepare them. This event will aim to demystify careers in the art & design field and illustrate how a Stamps degree can help students reach professional goals following graduation.Date
