Fall Pre-College Programs

Fall portfolio-building programs for high school students interested in art and design.

Stamps Pre-College Programs now include Fall after-school and weekend studios, events, and workshops! Our virtual and in-person programs are offered to current high school students (grades 9 – 12) interested in building new skills for their creative pursuits, improving their portfolios, and learning more about U‑M’s Stamps School of Art & Design. 

Ann Arbor, Michigan is located in the Eastern Time Zone. All synchronous instruction will be offered following this standard time.

Fall Studios

Fall Studios provide opportunities for deep dives into different areas of art & design. Faculty will lead students in learning new techniques during studio sessions, and provide lectures, demonstrations, and feedback to support covered material. 

Virtual, twice-weekly afternoon programs include 3D Modeling Basics, Digital Photography, Drawing for Artists & Designers, Graphic Design Essentials, Illustration Techniques, and Stop Motion Animation; in-person weekend workshops include Alternative Photographic Processes, Drawing Fundamentals, and Palette to Canvas.

  • 3D Modeling Basics (Virtual)
    Virtual Studio for grades 9-12

    3D Modeling Basics is an online course introducing students to the fundamental aspects of 3D modeling. 3D modeling has versatile applications and is used for visualization, simulation, animation, and even for creating physical objects through 3D printing. Industries like gaming, film, architecture, and engineering rely on 3D modeling for design, development, and entertainment purposes.

    This program covers topics such as basic 3D geometry, texturing, lighting, and original character design. Through a series of projects and exercises, students will create unique three-dimensional forms ranging in complexity. Students will explore techniques in 3D modeling, engaging creatively with the medium to develop their character design and modeling skills. By the end of the program, participants will have created original 3D models and translated character sketches into 3D form, establishing the basis of a digital portfolio.

    Participants will use free and open-source software to create their models. No specialized software is required for this course, ensuring accessibility for all students.

    This online class will be conducted synchronously and asynchronously, providing students the opportunity to receive direct feedback from instructors while allowing for self-paced exploration and skill-building. Lectures, demonstrations, and visual aids will support the learning experience.

  • Digital Photography (Virtual)
    Virtual Studio for grades 9-12

    Digital Photography is an online class introducing students to technical and aesthetic components of digital photography. Through assignments and critiques, students gain a basic understanding of the history and evolution of photography. Students will become familiar with both contemporary and traditional methods of photographic expression and will engage creatively with photography as a method for problem solving.

    This online class is designed to introduce content synchronously and asynchronously. This format will give students opportunities to get direct feedback from their instructor and time to build their skills and to apply new concepts. Lectures, demonstrations and slides will enhance covered material.

    Digital Photography meets online Monday & Wednesday from 5-6:25 pm ET for a total of ten sessions.

    Virtual Studio for grades 9-12

    The ability to draw is essential for all practicing artists and designers.

    In Drawing for Artists & Designers, students will learn drawing concepts fundamental to contemporary art and design practice. Students will gain knowledge and experience in a variety of approaches, ranging from observational to experimental drawing. Each class session is structured as studio time, giving students ample opportunity to build their drawing skills and apply new concepts. Lectures, demonstrations and slides will enhance covered material.

  • Graphic Design Essentials (Virtual)
    Virtual Studio for grades 9-12

    Graphic Design Essentials is an online class introducing students to the fundamental aspects of graphic design. Through hands-on projects and critiques, students will gain a foundational understanding of the elements and principles of design. This program introduces students to topics such as typography, visual identities, print publication layouts and the use of signs and symbols in visual communication.

    Students will explore both contemporary and traditional approaches to graphic design, engaging creatively with the medium as a method for problem solving and communication. By the end of the program, participants will have developed a basic portfolio of graphic design work and understanding of graphic design methods.

    Students will explore using freeware like Canva as a tool to create designs worthy of a portfolio. Specialized software is not required for this program.

    This online class is designed to introduce content synchronously and asynchronously. This format will give students opportunities to receive direct feedback from their instructor while allowing ample time to build their skills and apply new concepts. Lectures, demonstrations, and visuals will enhance the material covered.

    Graphic Design Essentials meets online Tuesday and Thursday from 5 - 6:25 pm ET for a total of ten sessions.

  • Illustration Techniques (Virtual)
    Virtual Studio for grades 9-12

    Interested in illustration? Get your start in Illustration Techniques!

    Illustration Techniques is an online class introducing students to fundamental visualization skills used by artists and designers when working creatively in two dimensions. Students will gain familiarity and hands-on experience with a variety of two-dimensional practices and media.

    In this class, students will explore fundamental concepts such as value, positive and negative space and color theory. Techniques such as working with paint, mixed media and collage will also be introduced.

    This online class is designed to introduce content synchronously and asynchronously. This format will give students opportunities to get direct feedback from their instructor and time to build their skills and to apply new concepts. Lectures, demonstrations and slides will enhance covered material.

    Illustration Techniques meets online Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30-7:55 pm ET for a total of ten sessions.

  • Stop Motion Animation (Virtual)
    Virtual Studio for grades 9-12

    Stop Motion Animation is an online course introducing students to the fascinating world of animated filmmaking through the art of stop motion. Students will explore and experiment with unconventional materials and creative storytelling, learning the fundamentals of transforming static images into moving art using only a smartphone and everyday supplies.

    Designed to introduce content both synchronously and asynchronously, this course offers students the flexibility to learn techniques at their own pace while benefiting from direct feedback and support from their instructor. Through a combination of technical exercises, guided demonstrations, and project-based assignments, students will build foundational skills in stop motion animation that can be applied to any form of animation in the future.

    Lectures, demonstrations, and interactive slides will enhance students' understanding of the mechanics of animation, while hands-on projects will guide them through the creation and production of a short animated piece for their portfolios. Please note that animation is exciting and rewarding, but also time-intensive—students should plan to devote additional hours outside of class to complete their projects.

    Whether you’re new to animation or looking to add a unique project to your creative portfolio, Stop Motion Animation is the perfect place to dive into this magical and imaginative art form!

  • Weekend Workshop: Alternative Photographic Processes (In-Person)
    In-Person Studio for grades 9-12

    Photography is so much more than just point and click!

    In Weekend Workshop: Alternative Photographic Processes, students will explore a range of methods artists use to create photographic prints. While some of these alternative processes apply new technology, most have been well known for over 100 years. Students will use these techniques to create non-traditional photographic artworks.

    Processes employed in this workshop may include cyanotype, tintype and photographic transfer. Our studio format offers students ample opportunity to apply test skills and develop their artistic voice. Engaging lectures and live demonstrations will inspire creativity, setting the stage for each participant to meet their full artistic potential.

    Weekend Workshop: Alternative Photographic Processes meets Saturdays from 9:30 am-12 pm for a total of four sessions. This class will meet in-person at the Stamps School of Art & Design.

    In-Person Studio for grades 9-12

    In Weekend Workshop: Palette to Canvas, students will learn the essentials of painting on canvas using non-toxic paints. Students will learn how to work with these unique materials to create complete artistic compositions.

    Students will explore a variety of painting styles and techniques throughout the class. This workshop will also offer instruction on foundational techniques in color-mixing and brushwork - methods students can use to elevate their creative work. Our studio format offers students ample opportunity to apply test skills and develop their artistic voice. Engaging lectures and live demonstrations will inspire creativity, setting the stage for each participant to meet their full artistic potential.

Fall Events

Fall Events are single session opportunities for in-person creative practice. 

Explore the University of Michigan with our series of in-person Drawing on Campus sessions, held at three different U‑M museums on the Ann Arbor campus. Each week, participants will gain insider knowledge about a museum through a guided tour, then will practice their observational drawing skills by working directly from the museum’s collection. These programs are ideal for students with varied interests; art, botany, history, archeology, paleontology, and more. Participants are welcome to register for just one program or all three.

  • Drawing on Campus: Matthaei Botanical Gardens (In Person)
    In-Person Event for grades 9-12

    In this session of our Drawing on Campus program, you will practice drawing skills in the conservatory of the Matthaei Botanical Gardens. Drawing time will be accompanied with a guided tour of the plants displayed in the conservatory. This program will not only help you elevate your technical skills, but will also introduce participants to the plant diversity and biomes represented in this living museum. Perfect for an aspiring naturalist!

  • Drawing on Campus: Kelsey Museum of Archeology (In Person)
    In-Person Event for grades 9-12

    In this session of our Drawing on Campus program, you will practice drawing skills in the galleries of the Kelsey Museum of Archeology. Drawing time will be accompanied by a guided tour of the museum’s exhibitions. This program will not only help you elevate your technical skills, but will also introduce participants to 1,500 artifacts of Classical, Egyptian, and Middle Eastern archaeology on permanent display at the Kelsey.

  • Drawing on Campus: Stearns Collection of Musical Instruments (In Person)
    In-Person Event for grades 9-12

    In this session, you will practice drawing skills in the Stearns Collection of Musical Instruments at the School of Music, Theater and Dance. The Stearns Collection comprises more than 3,000 historical and contemporary musical instruments from all over the world. Built on an initial gift from Frederick Stearns in 1899, the collection is internationally renowned for its diversity, exhibiting and promoting instruments from cultures on six continents. Drawing time will be accompanied with a guided tour of the collection and a short musical performance of instruments from the collection. This program will not only help you elevate your technical drawing skills, but will also inspire a passion for music, culture and preservation.

Fall Workshops

Free, virtual Fall Workshops offer students and parents in-depth opportunities for advice on getting started with college applications and portfolios (Application Prep), and learning about the opportunities available after graduation (Career Connections).

  • Application Prep (Virtual)
    Virtual Workshop Series for grades 9-12

    Let’s get your application ready! Application Prep is a series of virtual workshops led by the Stamps Pre-College team. This program is designed to introduce students to Stamps’ Admissions standards, focusing on a variety of topics including: personal essays, portfolio preparation and overall application strategy.

    In Application Prep, Pre-College team members will walk participants through the important elements of application preparation. These workshops will help students feel confident as they press “submit” on their college application and offer strategies for how they can showcase their best work and unique perspective.

    Application Prep meets online Wednesdays from 4-5 pm ET for a total of four sessions. All sessions are free of charge.

  • Career Connections (Virtual)
    Virtual Event Series for parents and students in grades 9-12

    You’re a parent with a talented student and they have their heart set on applying to art school - how will they use an art and design degree to pursue a career in the field?

    Our Career Connections series will introduce families to a wide array of creative careers that can be attained with an art and design degree. This professional development series will demystify the art and design field and demonstrate how a Stamps degree will help your student reach their full potential after graduation.

    Career Connections will feature an Alumni Panel Discussion. Learn how recent Stamps alumni leveraged their Stamps degree to kickstart creative careers and how Stamps prepared them to succeed as professionals. All sessions are free of charge.

Application Instructions

Step 1: Apply

  • Students must apply to each Stamps Pre-College Studio, Event, and Workshop they’d like to attend separately. Visit the individual links for each program above, or view all opportunities and start applying here.

  • Students seeking financial assistance for Stamps Pre-College Studios and Events must complete the​Financial Assistance application with the help of a parent/​guardian and provide all required materials.

  • All applications must be completed by 11:59 PM EDT on Friday, September 52025.

Step 2: Review

  • Pre-College Program staff will review and render an admissions decision for each individual program application.

  • Pre-College Program staff will review each individual application for need-based financial assistance.

  • Pre-College Program staff will contact the applicant and the parent, legal guardian, or caretaker they listed in their application with additional information and next steps.

    Step 3: Register

    • After receiving the acceptance email from Pre-College Program staff, a parent, legal guardian, or caretaker must complete a youth participant’s registration by the date stated in the acceptance email to secure their place in the Stamps Pre-College programs.

    • Parents, legal guardians, or caretakers will follow the link on the participant’s acceptance email and create an account using their own email address (not the participant’s email address).

    • Parents/​legal guardians will select a term: Fall 2025. Participants will refer to their acceptance email for instruction.

      Step 4: Pay Deposit

      • After registration, a deposit is required to secure a youth participant’s place in each program.

      • A deposit invoice will be sent via email from BITeam@​umich.​edu. All invoices will be billed to the default parent, legal guardian, or caretaker.

      • Parents, legal guardians/​caretakers will submit payment following the instructions and due date outlined on the invoice for the deposit.

      • Deposits are non-refundable.

        Step 5: Pay Balance

        • An invoice with the remaining balance will be sent 30 days before the start of the program. Participants will refer to their acceptance email for instruction.

        • An invoice for the remaining balance will be sent via email by BITeam@​umich.​edu. All invoices will be billed to the default parent, legal guardian or caretaker.

        • Parents, legal guardians/​caretakers will submit payment following the instructions and due date outlined on the invoice for the remaining balance.

        Step 6: Participate!

            Financial Assistance

            Scholarships are available to select students who have registered for Stamps Pre-College Programs. A limited number of full and partial awards will be provided to students who demonstrate need and merit.

            Students seeking financial assistance for Stamps Pre-College Studios and Events must complete the​Financial Assistance application with the help of a parent/​guardian and provide all required materials. The Financial Assistance application must be submitted by the September 5 application deadline.

            Eligibility

            Our Fall 2025 Pre-College programs, events, and workshops are open to all current high school students in grades 9 – 12.
