Curriculum Vitae

M.F.A. (Printmaking and Drawing), University of Michigan School of Architecture and Design, 1975 B.S. (Design), University of Michigan School of Architecture and Design, 1968

During his graduate studies at the University of Michigan, Larry Cressman received several Rackham Fellowships, and his work was included in regional and national print and drawing exhibits throughout the country. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, including Michigan Council for the Arts Creative Artists grants.

Since 1976 Cressman has taught printmaking and drawing in the Studio Arts Program of the U-M Residential College, receiving several LSA Excellence in Education teaching awards during that time. He has also taught in art programs at the University of Rhode Island, the University of Toledo and at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He joined the School of Art & Design faculty in 2004.

In recent years, he has also served on the faculty of the U-M’s Summer Study Abroad Program near Florence, Italy.

Over the past 25 years, Cressman’s work has evolved considerably through his explorations of drawing as a three-dimensional form of expression. This work has often focused on a physical line and the inherent structural possibilities of the material paper. Site-specific projects have been a particular interest, and his installations have been included in shows at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Carnegie Mellon University, the Lenore Gray Gallery of Providence, Rhode Island, and the University of Michigan Museum of Art, as well as many other venues.

Cressman has maintained an active exhibition schedule throughout his career. Since 1986, his work has been represented by the Hill Gallery in Birmingham, Michigan. Recently, four of his installations were part of the group show, Super-sized: Large Scale Drawing from New York and Detroit, held at the Meadowbrook Art Gallery of Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan.
