A painting of trees near a body of water

Work by Stamps MFA candidate Hannah Buchanan is featured in Scenes of a Midwestern Home, a solo exhibition of paintings on view at the Arts and Environment Gallery from February 24 — March 31, 2025. The exhibition opens with a reception from 5:30 — 7:30 p.m. on Monday, February 24, which will include refreshments, a Q&A session with the artist, and music by Paul Cirillo.

Sponsored by the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS), the Arts and Environment Gallery is located in the Ford Commons on the first floor of the Dana Building (440 Church Street, Ann Arbor, MI 48109).

About the Work: Painting is a method of world-building for me. The landscapes in this exhibit explore a personal connection to my surroundings where I see every aspect of the environment as essential and therefore paint all parts as visually equal. As a child in rural Indiana, I spent time behind in the ravine and woods behind my house. These experiences and spaces have long intrigued me, remarking how rocks, streams, and wildlife are ever-changing in constant cycles of renewal. In my paintings, I seek to recreate these continuously transforming environments in ways that demonstrate the care and fascination I feel towards these scenes. I use a limited, enigmatic palette that evokes mystery and the sublime. Color shifts, translucent layering, rhythmic lines, and undulating shapes make these spaces lively and dreamlike, bordering on both the real and the imaginary.
