Detroit Month of Design: United by Design 2023

The Annual Detroit Month of Design Festival is a citywide celebration of creativity that gathers designers and the greater community to celebrate Detroit’s role as a national and global design capital. Among the partners participating in the cross-disciplinary events are Stamps faculty, alumni, and staff members. 

Check out some events featuring members of the Stamps community at this year’s Detroit Month of Design Festival.

Ergo <ITSELF> Opening Reception

Saturday, September 9 | 6 – 8 PM

Ergo <ITSELF> is a solo exhibition featuring Detroit-based artist and Stamps alum Paula Schubatis (BFA 13). The exhibition is a fluid environment, grounded by a nest-like structure where the viewer can enter and engage with various multi-functional objects. Objects from a hand-woven rug or ottoman to sculptural garments worn by models moving about the space encourage intuitive interaction and use.

Mending the Net, presented by Fiber Club*, is stacked with Stamps students, alumni, faculty, and staff. The events will allow the community to experience a varied range of textile-based art in one thematically-linked show. Founded by Stamps Major Gifts Officer and Stamps alum Katie Shulman (BFA 10), Fiber Club* is organized around a shared curiosity and passion for fiber and textile-based processes.

    Visitors can discover work from a collection of designers and artists in North End Detroit. The event features Stamps alum Ellen Rutt (BFA 12), a multi-disciplinary artist. 

    Open Studios Grand on River 5001 Grand River Ave September 16 1PM-6PM

    Open Studios at Grand on River

    Saturday, September 16th | 1:00 PM — 6:00 PM

    In this one-day event, visitors can view studios in Grand on River, home to five art and design studios and a multipurpose gallery/​event space. You can stop by the studios of 2D/​Fibers Studio Coordinator Kit Parks (BFA 15) and 2D Media Studio Coordinator Nicholas Dowgwillo while you’re there!

    NewLab x Michigan Central: The Art of Innovation; An Immersive Experience Uniting the Intersection of Art and Technology

    Tuesday, September 26 | 5:00 PM — 9:00 PM

    Stamps alum Senghor Reid (BFA 99) has wraps on three 40-foot-tall water cisterns at Michigan Central. In this event, attendees will view original artwork from local artists like Reid and appreciate the showcase of Innovation, Technology, and Art.
