The 2023 Stamps Commencement Celebration will be held from 2:00 — 4:00 pm on Saturday, April 29 at the North Campus Research Complex in Building 18. Doors will open at 12:45 pm for guests; students are requested to arrive at 12:45 pm for a class photo. 

Our event will follow the main University of Michigan Commencement Ceremony, held at Michigan Stadium from 10:00 — 11:45 am.

This celebration will be an in-person event featuring short speeches by graduating undergraduate and graduate students and a commencement address by alumna, artist, and educator Cecilia (Ceci) Méndez-Ortiz.

About Cecilia (Ceci) Méndez-Ortiz

Cecilia (Ceci) Méndez-Ortiz is a seasoned joy-and-justice seeking arts and culture worker, community builder, artist, arts/​education administrator, and navigator of life on earth. She is the Executive Director of the Center for Art and Community Partnerships at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and Co-director of the Radical Imagination for Racial Justice regranting program in Boston, MA. In 2021, Ceci was named a Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Next 50” Honoree, one of fifty leaders lighting the way forward toward a more inspired, inclusive, and compassionate world. Ceci holds a BA with Honors in Art from Brown University, and an MFA from the University of Michigan School of Art and Design. Living at the heart of where art, education, and community connect, her installations, prints, drawings, and bilingual animations (Spanish/​English) have been exhibited and screened in Mexico, Japan, and across the U.S.

Ceremony Tickets

  • Tickets are required to attend this event.

  • Tickets are free of charge.

  • Ticket requests will be available online to graduating students from February 1 — March 312023.

  • Physical tickets will be available for pick-up at the Stamps Dean’s Suite starting on April 62023.

  • All students participating in Commencement are required to present an event ticket to be admitted to the ceremony and participate in the graduate procession.

    • Graduate seating is pre-established, and graduates sit together. These tickets are not marked with a section, row or seat number. Commencement staff will direct graduates to their seats.

  • All other guests, including family members and children two years of age and older, are required to present a guest ticket to attend the event.

    • Bachelor’s and Master’s degree recipients are eligible to receive up to 4 guest tickets each.


Students are welcome to wear caps and gowns to the Stamps commencement ceremony, but this attire is not required for participation. Opportunities for decorating mortarboards will take place at Stamps during the week before the event.

Travel & Directions

The Stamps Commencement Celebration will take place in Ann Arbor at the North Campus Research Complex, less than 40 miles from Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

Guests are encouraged to park in U‑M parking structure NC100, located north of NCRC Building 18. This parking structure will be open at noon, and parking is free of charge for commencement attendees.

Accessible Parking & Drop Off

Parking for vehicles with state-issued disability parking plates or tags is available in on the NC99 Parking lot located north of NCRC Building 18. This parking lot will open at noon, and parking is free of charge for commencement attendees. Spaces will be available on a first come, first served basis.

The roundabout in front of NCRC Building 18 will function as a drop-off area for any guests with mobility challenges. Guests may wait at the lobby of NCRC Building 18 for the rest of their party to join them.

Event Accessibility

The Stamps School of Art & Design and the University of Michigan strive to ensure that all graduates and guests can participate fully in this program. 

On commencement day, staff will be available throughout NCRC Building 18 to assist attendees with accessibility concerns. 

Accessible Restrooms: Accessible restrooms are located near the elevators.

Real-Time Captioning: Graduates and guests will have access to real-time captioning during the ceremony.

Accessible or Wheelchair Seating: Accessible or wheelchair seating for graduates or guests can be requested during the ticket reservation process.

The 2023 Stamps Commencement Celebration will be available as a livestream for those who can’t attend in person, and a recorded version will be available in May 2023.
