A painting of a Black woman showing her bare back with a magnolia in her hair which is styled in a low bun. The background is black with transparent black and white hands reaching towards her from all angles. The woman hugs herself, and her hands appear on either side of her back. On her back are open wounds. The scratches are bleeding and write out the word 'MINE'.

In a way, one only has true ownership over their body. We are both born within and will die within our body. It is the one thing that is yours and yours alone. This piece is meant to depict the ongoing struggle that exists surrounding bodily autonomy in various ways in today's society. Many of us ask ourselves, who is meant to make such decisions? For me, this piece is infused with my frustration and fear that arise as my rights continue to be debated upon. Painting is often therapeutic for me, as it is calming and allows for me to use my voice. In times where my future is constantly discussed and pondered over, pieces such as this allow for me to feel heard.
