Redeeming Eve

A tree of life inspired by the traditional Mexican sculptures depicting the Christian story of creation. In this garden of Eden, Eve is a sensuous, fertile and unashamed woman. A primal and voluptuous mother, she is free, happy, proud, and open. She loves her body. Her breasts are full, her hips are wide. Nobody has called her fat. Size-zero jeans have not been invented. Eve is on top of a crescent Moon, the eternal feminine. Adam is standing on the exact complement of the crescent Moon, a man not to be feared. Red flags have not yet been invented either. Mary, on the other side of the tree, is the eternal yes. She is strong and brave. She is moving forward, full of love and confident of her power. Mary and Eve. Women. Women connected with a serpent. A defeated serpent that is. Yes, an apple being offered and probably eaten. It doesn’t matter, because the head of the serpent is not stalking Eve anymore: it is under the powerful foot of Mary. Mary -the strong loving mother- is crushing the head of the serpent, and in doing so she is perpetually redeeming Eve and all womanhood from eternal guilt.
