A sculpture with semi-realistic fleshy textures. It has freckles, boils, hair, veins, a subtle scar, and a wet looking orifice at the top. The abstract shape contrasts the immediately recognizable surface, making it uncanny and evoking feelings of both disgust and fascination.

Lump of Flesh

My Lump of Flesh is a representation of my idea of body neutrality, in which I accept the body at its simplest, most physical level. I wanted to depict flesh in all its forms - pimpled, hairy, lumpy, whatever else - neutrally. The piece is not meant to present the body as a good or bad thing but rather to represent it as a form that simply exists regardless of the societal standards or personal feelings we attach to it. Bodies are the way they are, and that is just fine. On a strictly personal level, creating the Lump allowed me to explore my immense appreciation for anatomy. Our bodies may seem gross and gory to many but they are fascinating and complex as well. Although the intended meaning of the piece is neutral, I see it as my ode to flesh in all its evocative and visceral glory. The Lump of Flesh is an indirect result of millions of years of evolution condensed into just a few weeks of work.
