What do a lovable rookie, a brooding ex-convict, and an insecure three-time divorcé (and counting) have in common? Next to nothing, really–besides the fact they’re the star players for the NHL’s newest team: the Centerville Creatures, an investment created with the hopes of growing an even bigger financial market for the NHL. Meet Scott, Pocky, and Robert…but no flash photography, please! Scott’s got a concussion (or three), and the last person who photographed Pocky took his mugshot. Robert’s just happy to be here.
Puck Off is an illustrated narrative following the antics of an all-new ragtag hockey team whose three star prospects must learn to collaborate despite their zany qualities. This single-edition experimental comic emerged through a devoted process of distinctive character design and expressive portraiture to bring forth a fictional world built from my imagination. The work combines my passions for illustration, graphic design, and comedic storytelling within the framework of an episodic series. The final drafting and publishing process has shown me that comics can exist beyond the rigidity of square panels, and blossom into a multimodal artform.
