“Roots” is an exhibition where old materials find new life in the form of furniture. In my designs, I want to embrace the character of recycled wooden furniture, cherishing its imperfections as reminders of each piece’s history while incorporating them into a new object with a different purpose. Japanese Mingei, a tradition which asserts the importance of a relationship between material and memory, became a rich source of conceptual connections within my designs. I have specific relationships with the materials I used in my project, with many coming from my family. By furnishing our spaces with pieces that utilize recycled materials, we contribute to a more sustainable future.
My father and grandmother fostered my love for physically building objects, especially items that take on a more functionalist design. I find pride in giving new life to old heirlooms, transforming them through my design to create something which not only retains memories past, but celebrates the potential for new memories to be made.
