I have loved dinosaurs since I was six years old, so much so that I begged my teacher to let me present a three-page paper about the topic in the second grade. Learning all I can about these larger-than-life creatures brings me great joy. I want nothing more than to share that love and enthusiasm with those around me. Finally, 17 years later, I get to do that with my project Evolving Perspectives.
The works presented are oil-based relief prints; which connects the act of making to the act of finding fossils. To create a print, one must carve away at material to create a desired image. To find fossils, one must dig away at the earth. This is where artistic and scientific processes come together to tell their interconnected history.
This artistic natural history museum examines how dinosaurs are presented to the public. Paleoart, which was developed in the 1800s by figures like Charles R. Knight, depicts dinosaurs as bony, scaly, and horrific creatures in constant life-or-death battles. New developments in the paleontological field have revealed new complexities and points of view. Evolving Perspectives explores these advancements to create new ways of envisioning and presenting dinosaurs.
