The audio/video installation I Never Told You, But…uses language barriers to explore how romantic relationships parallel the experience of living abroad. Consisting of layers of projected video in which I speak to the viewer in Korean, I express various emotions, including the frustrations of not being understood and the struggle to explain oneself in a foreign language. Through this piece, I explore the duality of love with the frustration of communicating, especially with language and cultural barriers.
As this project is deeply rooted in my experience, it was crucial to talk about it through my body and voice. I wrote the script in Korean, my native language. I wrote down the things I wanted to say to my boyfriend but never did. Some of the feelings I wrote down come from differences in culture, some are due to differences in language, and some are simply struggles of being a couple.
The audience will actively engage in my piece by navigating through the space to listen to what the piece means, what I am saying in Korean, and what emotions I am experiencing.
