"In Her Honor" serves as a celebratory altar dedicated to my late great-grandmother, Geraldine Lewis Brock, ultimately providing a space for mourning and reflection. When COVID first emerged in 2019, my family and I were unable to bid a proper farewell to Grandma Geri. Amidst the chaos, her body was cremated, depriving us of the chance to grieve properly and to have a physical place to honor her memory. Instead, we conducted a small lantern ceremony, which felt inadequate for commemorating her vibrant and rich life. Through this project, I embarked on a journey of discovery about my great-grandmother, while also processing my own grief. My objective is to resonate with those who have experienced significant loss, while also providing viewers with an opportunity to mourn and nurture positive memories. The installation encourages a shift from regret to celebration, highlighting achievements and cherished moments shared with loved ones.
