Bea, Babel & the Dragon is an imaginative children’s fantasy book (ages 6-10). The story follows a young fire sprite and water nymph who set off on a quest to defeat a not-so-scary dragon. Along the way, they overcome personal obstacles involving jealousy and comparison through empathy and trust. The physical copy of the book consists of nearly 40 pages of illustration and text. The story and reading level works as a bridge between picture books and chapter books, with the intention of helping young people to read independently.
Illustration has been my primary and favorite media since I was very young, and has been a way for my imagination to run free. I grew up in Minnesota, and have always had a particular fondness for winter landscapes, which are present within this project. Drawing has always been a part of my daily routine. When developing this project, I worked on blending my personal drawing style with a more child-like and vibrant approach. The fantasy landscape of Bea, Babel & the Dragon incorporates elements inspired by Ghibli, Disney, and Robert Inkpen, while also developing a style that is uniquely its own.
