Ceramic, Plaster, Wood, Woven Cloth, & Relief Print on Handmade Paper
Undergraduate
In 2022 alone, US consumers spent $65 billion on living room furniture, with the majority of these pieces existing within the home for 10 years or less. Popular mass-produced furnishings aren’t built to last, contributing to the shortage of materials necessary to support life. I created Clay House to spark conversations about the devastating impact of throwaway culture and overconsumption. Every element of the installation including the wood, clay, paper, and fibers have been reclaimed to be given a new life.
The ceramic pieces will take over a thousand years to break down, outliving the most prominent forms of furniture we see in homes today. Each object simultaneously exists as both sculptural and functional, allowing the audience to question how we define furniture.
