Born and raised in the LDS Church, I could not help but notice a distinct lack of visual culture in regular worship, limited to nebulous, classical-style paintings that seemed to go unnoticed. What if there could be religious art that spoke to contemporary sensibilities? These ten pieces seek to explore the hopes, challenges, and spiritual perspectives of the upcoming generation of Latter-day Saints as they transition to adulthood. Drawing upon both the symbolic tradition of early Christianity and the visual culture and devices borne of “Generation Z,” Musings of a Young Mormon attempts to marry two seemingly idiosyncratic art styles to recontextualize theological concepts as they apply to the modern day.
