Hannah Finch: Self-Care Through Clay

Self-Care Through Clay

Using mindfulness methods, this series of non-verbal ceramic journal entries engages with self-awareness through tactile connection. Releasing control and transferring my emotions into the clay, my work embraces natural imperfections and explores nature’s beneficial sensation and environment, as well as how scent impacts wellness. Expanding my definition of creative process, the journal entries were created not from sketches, but from feelings both physical and emotional. In addition to exploring the expressive properties of clay, I have utilized clay as a guide to sensory and mindful awareness through crafting planter pots from naturally sourced clay. Furthermore, the therapeutic immersion of bathing in clay connected me with the earth and natural environment around me. I seek to expand the boundaries of practicing wellness and break through stereotypes of what “self-care” means.
