This installation frames mothers and mother-figures as the omniscient narrators of their households through the aesthetic language and spatial dynamics of theater. It imagines the home as a stage set and familial experience as a performance–one that is scripted, directed, and stage-managed by the mother.
Storytelling is a central component of women’s work, with all the baggage that implies. Unacknowledged, uncompensated, and largely invisible–narrative labor creates lived experiences within the home while exacting a high price from those who spend a lifetime in the role of narrator. This work explores how stories create kinship and closeness, make sense of tragedy and trauma, and become an integral part of a daughter’s inheritance.
