Transitory Beauty

The ephemeral beauty of Epiphyllum serves as a poignant metaphor in my work, drawing from Chinese cultural symbolism. In Chinese tradition, these tragic flowers symbolize the fleeting nature of beauty and transient moments. Likewise, the historical practice of foot binding, intended to enhance the allure of affluent young ladies, becomes intertwined with the narrative of fragility. Through my art, I explore the juxtaposition of elegance and transience, embodied by a delicate young lady. Despite her graceful posture, her shattered head and falling flower petals signify the inevitable conclusion of her blooming phase. This composition serves as a reflection on the poignant parallels between the brevity of beautiful events, the ephemeral nature of life, and the societal constructs that shape our perceptions of attractiveness and grace.
