A painting showing a white woman laying down with a pillow under her head, and two orange cushions on either side of her body. She is wearing a blue shirt and her brown hair is splayed across the pillow. One arm lays next to her head, and the other is held above her chest. Her eyes are looking to the side.

This piece was completed in Joyce Brienza’s class, Intro to Painting: Organizing Visual Space. It was a challenge to paint a self portrait, I couldn’t decide how to present myself. I found myself creating an image that felt most comfortable and familiar to me. The clothing that I wore, the cushions that supported me, and how they felt on my skin were important to create a comfortable environment. Color has become such an important part of my life in the last year. I used to be afraid to wear color. I never wanted to be more invisible than the day I turned 19. In this last year, I have grown to understand and be less afraid of my body.
