Hikikomori

Jean Lin

Hikikomori is a Japanese term that refers to the state of acute social withdrawal, or a person with such state. Typical hikikomori do not go out of their room and spend majority of their time on the Internet having no direct personal interactions. Their confinement is a form of protection to isolate one's self from what is perceived as harmful society. There are currently over 1 million hikikomori in Japan and more across the globe, as it has been increasing over the past 20 years. In sum, they can be seen as if they are on a massive strike against society.
