Carly Strauss: Noon Skate

Noon Skate

Carly Strauss

11:58 AM. The first person steps onto the ice, as others are around the corner, entering Yost Arena, scanning their fobs, and tying up laces. Slowly, majority of these people step onto the frozen sheet of water, one at a time. There are a few people in the building who aren't skating, but the majority of the visitors slowly glide around the oval around the rink, silently communicating to each other what their subsequent movements will be to avoid crashing. Some skate in pairs, catching up on each other's lives outside the walls, while others skate individually as music plays throughout the arena. Soon, the ice is empty, and the zamboni clears all marks of an evidence of this daily ritual that a wide sampling of the Ann Arbor community take part in as well as the stories they hold within.

Through this project, I wanted others to learn about the best-kept lunch secret in Ann Arbor and the unique community between people from all different walks of life. The book includes quotes and pictures of the regulars who attend Noon Skate.
