Hillary Butterworth: The Loss is Ours

The Loss is Ours

Hillary Butterworth

40 percent of married women, surveyed by the American Animal Hospital Association, said they get more emotional support from their dogs than from their husband and children. I don't have a dog anymore, but sometimes they seem like the only thing easy enough to think about. Was that a cringy statement? Some days, I'm crippled by great crescendos of sentimental feeling. Sentimentality for nothing in particular... I just sit in my saccharine thoughts until I turn pruney and hope that nobody notices I'm there. On days like that, I draw dogs. I think this is what they have evolved to do over 30,000 years: Dogs contain and support the parts of ourselves that we don't know how to carry alone.
