Deanna Krueger: Tartarus

Tartarus

Deanna Krueger

My work generally begins with material that previously functioned as something else. Often what the material was has an impact on what it becomes. Part of the end product's meaning results from the disparity between the initial identity of the material and the form it eventually takes. I like disguise and surprise. I like humor. But like a person always making light, there is also an element of common human tragedy the joker is trying to hide. I am interested in humanity's collective search for meaning in the absurdity that is this life, and in the pleasure to be found in the various manifestations that search takes.
