Artist Stephanie Brown’s creative practice encourages critical consideration of self-perceptions based on skin color. Am I Enough is an exhibition that explores colorism and its influence on American society. Am I Enough challenges the psychological decisions we make as we construct our identities by pulling from dominant media, the judgement of our communities, and self-affirming family values or lack thereof. The installations exploit the language and undergirding assumptions of advertising; as well as personal scenarios to critique self-esteem and skin color discrimination as it reflects her own journey to understanding how brown skin became inferior.
