When we say an important topic is “trending,” we automatically imply its fleeting relevance. While some people believe “hashtag activism” impacts others, generates support, and prompts online research, I worry that it sometimes results in surface-level understanding that ultimately numbs us to the significance of these important topics. This piece highlights the direct relationship between trending topics and millennials’ addiction to scrolling through social media.
