“The Ballad” is an ongoing collaborative project we began in 2005 while working toward our degrees at California Institute of the Arts. For the past 12 years since then, we have been artistic and life partners photographing each other and ourselves together. As a queer identified couple, engaging in this ongoing photographic practice has been a way for us to make visible a love that moves through time and space while transcending fixed concepts of race and gender. This work depicts an inner and outer journey in search of claiming who we are in a world full of illusory ideas. Through performative interaction with our environment, that is at once intimate and public, we are seeking to continually challenge the definitions of our relationship to each other and our surroundings.
