Leslie Nobler: The Spirit and the Sailor

The Spirit and the Sailor

Leslie Nobler

Handmade dolls left behind by children lost during genocides in the USA and Europe inspired this piece. This is based on my exploration of the literature, and the life of and about children during WWII and special relics preserved during the Holocaust - pairing that up with those ritual objects representing groups subject to genocide in the USA, i.e. native Americans. The value of the heritage and “soul” of these majestic, and sometimes sorrowful, artifacts contributes to my artwork’s “human” - touchable - attitude both literally and emotionally. The larger piece above is the monoprint that came first; beneath it you see an open “spread” of the artist's book by the same name.
