Queen Esther
I am fascinated by contrasts in both materials and subject matter.
In my piece, “Queen Esther,” I consider a woman’s position and status in a dangerous world. I have chosen a historical figure to represent the precarious position in which a woman may find herself when perceived as sexual, powerful, intelligent and articulate. The knowing stare, sumptuous form and world in her hand, contrasts with her readiness to flee in her hiking boots. Likewise, I used reflective glass and matt pastel to represent the contrast of power and vulnerability women can face in society.
