A subject I have returned to many times is scenes from Eastern European shtetl life. I've been especially inspired by the work of playwright and early anthropologist S. Ansky who documented children's games and songs in Southern Poland in 1911 and 1912. I have tried to convey these children in a way that expresses the passage of time, the effort to hold on to their memory and their probable tragic fate. The children are the subject but so is Time and Memory........
