Ex Americus

Benjamin Winans

This poster was originally designed to mimic an "Ex Libris” – a print meant for the front page of a book to show ownership. “Ex” is a word play, meaning either “former” or “out of/from”. Juxtaposed with an American flag stripped of its signature red stripes of courage, this design invites the viewer to choose what they see: is this white flag an indication of America’s white system of power, surrender, or a blank canvas ready for a new narrative? In this moment of acute change, it is time to reimagine and rethink what comes next.
