“Kid Princess” is a representation of the stories my mother would tell me as a child. When I could not fall asleep at night due to anxiety or fear, my mother would improvise a tale of a princess in a faraway land and time who was also anxious or afraid. The princess in Mom’s stories was always brave enough to conquer her fears. I knew that my mother was trying to create a world for me where I was that brave princess, where I could stand up to the darkness that often invaded my mind. In “Kid Princess,” a girl gazes into her reflection, touching her crown with the realization that she is the princess from the stories. This story exists in a realm closer to fairytales and my childhood dreams, so the print is meant to convey a degree of surrealism and nostalgia.
