Silence is Golden

Karson Schenk

Silence is Golden brings to question the relationship that National Geographic has maintained with Disney entertainment, first as a source of inspiration, and now as a subsidiary to Disney. Walter Benjamin warned of politics getting intertwined with entertainment, and this is a perfect scenario. Nat Geo played a very important role in the US establishing itself as a world power in the early 1900s, and arguably still does to this day. The golden rectangle is a silent symbol of US imperialism, nationalism, and neocolonialism. This animation is a call for a greater awareness of these influences and ideologies that dominate the US in light of the election and the Covid 19 pandemic.
