The Great Earth Race is an experiential, noncompetitive board game, using play to teach 3rd graders about climate change. It includes scenario cards where players must decide which choices they want to make to save the environment and lower the danger meter. Balancing make believe play with strategy and risk assessment, the game demonstrates studies showing that teaching children about the environment prepares them for the effects of the climate crisis and empowers them to make a difference in their own lives. Research shows they are then able to influence the older generations around them who might be skeptical of climate science. The game underwent multiple rounds of playtesting with 3rd graders to develop a mechanic and gameplay that would best promote learning through play.
