Matt Bierl is the Chief of Staff at the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design at the University of Michigan. Previously, Matt worked as Lead Studio Coordinator and Materials Fabrication Studio Coordinator: Product Design, Sculpture, and Metal Shop, serving as logistical manager, a technical expert, a conceptual sounding board, an organizational wizard and as host to the faculty and students that come to the studio to create. As a master maker himself, Matt enjoys working in areas between technology and tradition, whether making sculpture, furniture or various doodads, it’s the spaces where craftsmanship and handwork meet technology that he finds his passion.

Matt trained at Eastern Michigan University where he earned his Masters of Fine Arts Degree, and has also taught regionally in sculpture and three-dimensional design at the college and university level. Prior to joining the Stamps staff, Matt worked as a wood and metal shop technician at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit.

When out of the studio, Matt enjoys sunsets and long walks on the beach with his lovely wife.
