Biography
As a design researcher and interaction designer, Sun Young Park is interested in complex systems, services, and environments that shape people’s needs, behaviors, and cultures/practices. Her research lies at the intersection of Health Informatics, Human Computer Interaction (HCI), and Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW). In particular, her research focuses on designing and evaluating interactive systems to better support clinical collaboration, patient–provider interactions and patients’ health information management.
Sun Young’s ongoing research investigates the design space for patient-centric technologies to address patient needs and facilitate their information work in medical settings. Specifically, this work aims to identify patterns of adaptation behavior from patients – the behaviors stemming from patients’ efforts to ensure that they receive quality care when information and technologies are not readily available and/or do not adequately meet their needs. Her study related to communicating pediatric patient-centered health information has been recognized by the NSF through an early career award in 2017. Her previous work conducted an emergency care setting was included in the Best Paper Selection of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) Yearbook of Medical Informatics (2013), and was nominated as a finalist for the Diana E. Forsythe Award for the best publication at the intersection of informatics and social sciences (2013).
Sun Young is an active member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the world's largest educational and scientific computing society. She was selected to the Inaugural Class of the ACM Future of Computing Academy in 2017. Sun Young has served on many scientific and technical program committees for top-tier academic conferences, including ACM CHI 2018, CHI 2017, and DIS 2017, and will serve as a co-chair of the Doctoral Colloquium for iConference 2019.
Prior to her faculty position at the Stamps, Sun Young Park received a PhD degree in the Department of Informatics at the University of California, Irvine, where she worked in the Laboratory for Ubiquitous Computing and Interaction (LUCI). Sun Young previously worked as a HCI researcher in the HCI and Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. She received a Master of Design in Interaction Design degree at Carnegie Mellon University, and a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design (major) and Multi-Media Design (minor) degree at Ewha Woman’s University, Seoul, Korea.
