Robb DiMaria: Red Bull House of Art
Robb DiMaria’s (BFA 2005) latest work is on display at the Red Bull House of Art in Detroit’s Eastern Market. Curated by Matt Eaton, Robb has been selected to show new illustrations laser engraved into wood. “You [draw] for yourself at first,” says DiMaria. “It’s continuous entertainment.” DiMaria’s work for Red Bull House of Art started out on brown lunch bags, where his limited color palette of white, black and brown to depict “familiar yet unsettling” characteristics of the human character. The presentation of his laser-engraved illustrations has grown to large pieces of wood but the messaging and delivery remains the same. “I hope people see some familiarity or conjure a back story to my work,” adds DiMaria. “It’s good if there’s a disconnect. It’s good if there’s a connection. One or the other will happen, ideally both.”
The show runs through March 23.
