Reem Gibriel Curates Libya’s First Video Art Show

Reem Gibriel (MFA 2010) curates First Glance, Libya’s first ever video art show, and the biggest art exhibit in Libya since the fall of the Qaddafi régime. The art works will be exhibited on nine screens set up in the alleyways of Tripoli’s Old City. First Glance will showcase works by artists from 14 countries including A&D alumnus John Kanenburg (MFA 2011).

TRIPOLI — The Arête Foundation for Arts and Culture will hold ​“First Glance”, a video art exhibit in Tripoli’s Old City on 6 – 7 November 2012. 

​“First Glance” is the first exhibition of video art in Libya. ​“First Glance” will exhibit works by artists from Argentina, New Zealand, Japan, Egypt, Palestine, Syria, U.S.A., Britain, France, Lebanon, Australia, The Netherlands, India, and elsewhere.

“First Glance exhibit will allow viewers to navigate between Tripoli’s Old City landmarks while the ancient walls offer one of the latest forms of art,” said artist Reem Gibriel, who is the executive director of the Arête Foundation for Culture and Arts.

The art works will be exhibited on nine screens distributed between the lanes of the Old City in Tripoli. A map of the locations will be distributed at each point in the exhibit.

Gibriel added that ​“First Glance is an attempt to build bridges between art lovers and artists in Libya and their counterparts around the world in a free atmosphere and in a civilized manner that reflects the aspirations of all Libyans.”

The exhibited video art films will be shown from 6 – 8:30 P.M. on both nights of the exhibit. The exhibit’s starting point will be at the Arch of Marcus Aurelius in the Old City.
