DIY Spotlight: Comics Creator Shawn Martinbrough

On January 15, comics artist and creator Shawn Martinbrough presented the talk “Continuing the Legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Through the Art of Storytelling” as part of the 2018 University of Michigan Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Symposium.

A critically acclaimed creator/artist whose DC, Marvel and Dark Horse Comics projects include Batman: Detective Comics, Luke Cage Noir, Captain America, The Black Panther, and Hellboy: Secret Nature, Martinbrough is also the author of How to Draw Noir Comics: The Art and Technique of Visual Storytelling (Random House).

In this short video, Martinbrough sheds some light on the process of taking a written comics script and translating it to the page. The one-page, 5-panel script that Martinbrough works with in this video was authored by Stamps students Rowan Borninski, D Wang Zhao, and Elliot Melk under the guidance of Stamps professor Phoebe Gloeckner.
