Jessica Frelinghuysen’s Solo Exhibition Opens in Toledo

Gallery 3

Work by Stamps Lecturer Jessica Frelinghuysen is featured in her solo exhibition, A Public Tête-à-Tête, on view September 28 – December 31, 2019 at the Toledo Lucas County Main Library Gallery in Toledo, Ohio.

A Public Tête-à-Tête brings together some of Frelinghuysen’s most important projects over the last 15 years. These include her ongoing series of wearable screen-printed Paperhelmets, personal spaces to investigate, and a large interactive sound installation titled Conversation Domes. Gouache paintings and sketches accompany the work. The show is the first that the building’s 2000 sq. foot art gallery has seen since the re-opening of the new addition to the Art Deco library in September.

This exhibition brings pieces together that have not previously shared the same space, but have shared themes of communication and acute observations of social behaviors. The curator, Crystal Phelps, notes Jessica Frelinghuysen pushes the boundaries of communication through playful interactive artworks that delight our visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic senses. Her works highlight the absurdity of human interactions by surpassing the thresholds of verbal and nonverbal communication. By tracing auditory and visual pathways, Frelinghuysen translates daily behavioral dialogue into physical, wearable, and structural opportunities to engage and reflect.”

Join artist Jessica Frelinghuysen and exhibit curator Crystal Phelps on Saturday, November 9 to learn more about the exhibition, the artist’s processes, and concepts related to the work on view. Light refreshments provided.
