Janie Paul: Precious Earth, Landscapes from Prison

370b wynkoop 14

Janie Paul exhibits landscape paintings and drawings from her private collection at the Residential College Gallery at the University of Michigan. The gallery hours are 10 – 5 Monday through Friday until February 13th.

Janie has been collecting landscape drawings and paintings by artists incarcerated in Michigan prisons since 1996 when she curated the first Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners with Buzz Alexander. Now in it’s twentieth year, the Annual Exhibits are a project of the Prison Creative Arts Project based at the University of Michigan.

Writing about the work she says,“Prison artists carve out their sense of belonging by creating places of peaceful solitude where light and shadow create the shape of time. We enter into these places by the grace of the artist’s imagination and feel their presence in the stroke of the brush or the touch of the pencil.”
