Pulitzer Prize winning photographer and Stamps professor David Turnley was featured in a Michigan Insider article for his upcoming trip to South Africa with the University of Michigan football team. Alongside U‑M football coach Jim Harbaugh, Turnley is the co-creator of the books Rise Again and Enthusiasm Unknown to Mankind.

The award-award-winning photographer, who has spent much of the last four years documenting Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh’s tenure and the Wolverines’ seasons, spent much of his career photographing political and human struggles in more than 75 countries. But a significant portion of his career was spent in South Africa, where he spent 25 years documenting the evolution of South Africa, the release, election and life of Nelson Mandela and Mandela’s family. He wrote two books from his time in South Africa, and his photo of Mandela returning to his prison cell is one of the more iconic photos of the political leader.

I’d like to pay credit to Coach Harbaugh and to Warde Manuel and their vision and importance to have our players become world citizens and leaders,” Turnley said. I have had firsthand opportunity these last two years to go to Rome and to go to Paris just to see how incredible it is for these players. You literally see them walking off the plane after the trip walking a little taller, and I’m really proud of that.”
