Craig Varjabedian: A Sampling of Contemporary Portraiture

Yannabah C2 A9 Craig Varjabedian

Award-winning photographer Craig Varjabedian (BFA 1979) has been chosen to present selected images from his new portrait series of Native America at Afterimage Gallery in Dallas, Texas.

The faces of the Native American people I photograph reveal a profound sense of the sacred.” —Craig Varjabedian

The photographer is collaborating with Native Americans to celebrate their traditions and their past with the Native Light project. Through authentic photographic portraits Native Light presents the stories of Native Americans who strongly connect with their vibrant past, thrive in a modern world and sow seeds for a better future. This ongoing project will evolve into exhibitions and a book, contributing to a meaningful dialogue on the preservation of Native American cultural heritage and the importance of respecting all indigenous cultures.

The Afterimage Gallery opens the exhibition featuring five photographers who have produced some very compelling portraits. On display will be images from by Fran Forman of Massachusetts, Annette Elizabeth Fournet of Tennessee, R. J. Kern of Minnesota, Michael Massaia of New Jersey, and Craig Varjabedian of New Mexico. Each artist brings a unique contemporary vision to the genre. The exhbition opens on the evening of the Dallas Art Dealers Association’s Fall Gallery Walk, Friday September 7 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Craig Varjabedian is an award-winning photographer who explores the back roads of the American West, making pictures of the unique and quintessential. He shares awe-inspiring stories of the land and the people who live on it — one photograph at a time.
