Botanical Watercolors: Joanne Porter

Local artist, teacher and floral painter Joanne Porter (BFA 1972, AM 1975) has always been inspired by the seasonal variations in the garden. In her watercolors, she captures the freshness of spring, the warm palette of summer and the crispness of fall. Using many layers of watercolor paint, Porter conveys the delicate movement of the flowers as well as their richness of color. Her educational background includes a BFA and MFA from the U‑M School of Art & Design, and her work has been in one person gallery shows and on permanent display in hospitals, businesses and schools throughout southeastern Michigan.

Reconstructed Landscapes: Cheryl Dawdy

Ann Arbor artist Cheryl Dawdy received her BA from U‑M in 1980 and then dabbled in different media (printmaking, weaving, natural dyes) until discovering collage. She adores it for its spontaneity and perfect expression of her make it up as you go along” approach to life. Expectation invites disappointment, she contends, but an open mind offers unlimited potential. With that attitude, she works with old postcards, paper scraps, and pieces of old wallpaper washed with acrylic paint, creating landscape images some have described as wonderful little worlds you want to climb into” and the stuff of dreams.” Dawdy is also a singer for the Ann Arbor based musical performance group the Chenille Sisters.

Sooziedoozie: Susie McColgan

Susie McColgan’s (BFA 1981) love of textiles, fine art and whimsical illustration comes to life with the Sooziedoozie Dolls she created in 2012 at her McColgan Gallery in Saginaw, Michigan. Her passion is to bring happiness and heartfelt love to all ages through the eyes of innocence and fun. Each doll and soft sculpture is individually hand painted by McColgan and sewn with special care and attention to detail. Coco the little french girl, Sooziedoozie the little sweetie, and Gwendolyn the little cowgirl each have their own whimsical and curious story. McColgan graduated from the University of Michigan in 1981 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Her paintings and portraits are included in corporate and private collections across the U.S.
