Recognizing Excellence at Stamps

Our faculty are vital to the innovation, creativity, and community engagement that define the Stamps School of Art & Design. To ensure their tremendous contributions are acknowledged, we invite internal and university-wide award nominations from all U‑M faculty, staff, and students. We encourage you to reward the excellence around you. 

Nominations are reviewed by the Faculty Awards Committee, who will make selections based on the criteria provided for each award. Help us honor the members of our community who consistently go above and beyond in their work.

Submit a Faculty Award Nomination

You can nominate a Stamps faculty member for recognition by completing the form below. The process is easy: click the Submit a Nomination” button below, select a reason and/​or award, and provide your nominee’s information.

  • Nominations are restricted to University of Michigan faculty, staff, and students. You must be logged in with your U‑M credentials to submit a nomination.
  • Nominations are accepted on a rolling basis.
  • Self-nominations are not permitted.
  • Nomination Process

    Use the Stamps faculty award nomination form to recommend a faculty member for recognition using the following steps.

    1. Enter Your Information: As the nominator, include your name and Stamps affiliation.

    2. Enter Nominee’s Information: Provide the full name of the Stamps faculty member you're nominating.

    3. Select the reason for nomination: Choose from a list of broad categories that describe the reason for your nomination.

    4. Select an award for consideration (optional): If you'd like to request that your nominee be considered for a specific award or honor, you'll be able to select from a dropdown list of internal or University-wide awards available to Stamps faculty.

    5. Supporting statement: Briefly explain how this nominee exemplifies the reason for nomination and/or meets the selected award criteria above.

    6. Submit: After verifying the information, click Submit. Your nomination will be sent for review by the Faculty Awards Committee.

    What happens next?

    • Once you submit your nomination, it will be reviewed for eligibility by the Faculty Awards Committee.

    • You will be notified if additional information is required, such as a formal letter of support or additional endorsements.

    • If your nomination moves forward, the nominee will be informed, and the Faculty Awards Committee will manage any additional necessary steps in the submission process.

  • Review Process and Timeline
    1. Ongoing Nomination Review: Nominations are reviewed quarterly by the Stamps Faculty Awards Committee, in September, December, March, and June.

    2. Committee Review: Once submitted, nominations are compiled and reviewed by a peer committee. Recommendations are forwarded to the Dean and Executive Committee.

    3. Notification: The Dean’s Office or the Faculty Awards Committee will notify nominees selected for awards. Those not selected will remain in the queue for future consideration (up to two years).

    4. Recognition: Award recipients will be recognized at [event or ceremony] and announced via the Stamps website and community emails.

  • Available U-M Faculty Awards

    If you'd like to request that a nominee be considered for a specific award or honor, you'll be able to select from a dropdown list of the following internal or University-wide awards available to Stamps faculty:

    Arthur F. Thurnau Professorship

    • Thurnau Professorships recognize and reward faculty for outstanding contributions to undergraduate education, honoring those tenured faculty whose commitment to and investment in undergraduate teaching has had a demonstrable impact on the intellectual development and lives of their students.
    • Nominees must be tenured faculty members from the Ann Arbor campus.

    Carol Hollenshead Inspire Award

    • This award honors faculty, staff, and students (either an individual or a group) whose sustained efforts have resulted in greater equity with regard to gender, race, class, age, disability, gender identity, or sexual orientation.
    • Open to faculty, staff, and students (either an individual or a group) affiliated with any University of Michigan campus.

    Collegiate Lecturer

    • Each year, the university awards up to four Collegiate Lecturer titles in recognition of excellence in teaching and learning, service, or other contributions to the university.
    • Employees who hold the title of Lecturer II or Lecturer IV with at least 10 years of employment, have completed 2 major reviews, and are not on full layoff are eligible for nomination.

    Collegiate Professorships

    • Collegiate professorships are an important means of honoring distinguished faculty members, and have contributed significantly to the university’s ability to retain many prestigious faculty.
    • Unendowed Collegiate Professorships: School/College develops/utilizes internal criteria to select faculty for a UCP.

    Collegiate Research Professorship

    • This award recognizes exceptional scholarly achievement and impact on advancing knowledge in science, engineering, heath, education, the arts, the humanities or other academic field of study.
    • Research Full Professors at the University of Michigan with at least a 60% appointment are eligible; Tenured and tenure-track faculty are ineligible.

    Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award

    • These awards honor senior faculty who have consistently demonstrated outstanding achievements in the areas of scholarly research and/or creative endeavors, teaching and mentoring of students and junior faculty, service and related activities that have brought distinction to themselves and to the University of Michigan.
    • Nominees must be senior faculty with the rank of full professor.

    Distinguished Faculty Governance Award

    • Faculty members who consistently place University-wide interests on the same level as their personal career and departmental interests represent a scarce resource that all faculty members treasure. Their concern with the general welfare protects and nourishes our individual welfare. The kinds of corporate activities these University citizens take on give us a secure sense of collective conscience.
    • All members of the University Senate - assistant, associate, and full professors, research scientists, and librarians who are Senate Members, as well as clinical professors (assistant, associate, and full) and lecturers (I, II, III, and IV) with at least a 50% appointment - are eligible.

    Distinguished University Innovator of the Year Award

    • The Distinguished University Innovator of the Year Award honors faculty who have made important and lasting contributions to society by developing novel ideas and insights through their research and then translating them to practice.
    • Nominees must be a current member of the tenure/tenure track, research, or clinical faculty, or a team of up to five faculty members.

    Distinguished University Professorships

    • The University’s most prestigious professorships are awarded to recognize senior faculty with exceptional scholarly and/or creative achievements, national and international reputations for academic excellence, and superior records of teaching, mentoring, and service. Faculty selected for this recognition, in consultation with the dean of the school or college in which they hold an appointment, name the Professorship after a person of distinction in his or her general field of interest, preferably a person formerly associated with the University.
    • Nominees must be senior faculty with the rank of full professor.

    Faculty Recognition Awards

    • These awards are for mid-career faculty who have demonstrated remarkable contributions to the University through outstanding achievements in scholarly research and/or creative endeavors; excellence as a teacher, advisor and mentor; and distinguished participation in the service activities of the university and elsewhere.
    • Nominees must be tenured associate professors, or full professors with no more than four years in rank.

    Harold R. Johnson Diversity Service Award

    • The Harold R. Johnson Diversity Service Award was established in 1996 to recognize faculty whose service goes above and beyond their regular duties and contributes to the development of a culturally and ethnically diverse campus community.
    • Nominations will be accepted for all full-time tenured, tenure-track, research track, and clinical faculty on the Ann Arbor campus (including librarians, curators, and archivists).

    Henry Russel Award

    • Considered the University’s highest honor for faculty at the early to mid-career stages of their career, this University-wide award celebrates faculty who already have demonstrated an extraordinary record of accomplishment in scholarship, research, creativity, and teaching.
    • Nominees should be tenure-track instructional faculty with no more than 6 years in their current rank at the time of nomination.

    Henry Russel Lectureship

    • Considered the University’s highest honor for a senior member of its active faculty, the Henry Russel Lectureship is awarded annually to recognize a faculty member of exceptional achievements in research, scholarship and/or creative endeavors, and an outstanding record of distinguished teaching, mentoring, and service to the university and wider communities.
    • Nominees must be senior faculty with the rank of full professor.

    Jackie Lawson Memorial Faculty Governance Award

    • This award recognizes exceptional distinction reflected in faculty governance service to the entire University that reaches beyond the local campus confines of Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint. Recipients will have made a significant contribution to faculty governance on their home campus (typically UM-Dearborn or UM-Flint) and at a University-wide level involving at least one of the other University of Michigan campuses.
    • All University of Michigan faculty members are eligible for consideration.

    James S. Jackson Distinguished Career Award for Diversity Scholarship

    • This biennial award recognizes a senior faculty member at the University of Michigan who has made important contributions to understanding diversity, equity, and inclusion through research, scholarship and creative endeavors, who has an outstanding record as an educator in teaching and mentoring, and whose work has focused on issues of importance to underrepresented communities.
    • Nominees must be senior faculty at U-M with the rank of full professor (or professor emeritus).

    James T. Neubacher Award

    • The James T. Neubacher Award is presented annually to a member of the University of Michigan community for significant achievements in empowering people with disabilities, advocating for or advancing disability rights or disability justice, or increasing the accessibility of programs and services to promote disability inclusion.
    • This award is open to faculty, staff, students, and alumni at the University of Michigan.

    John H. D’Arms Faculty Awards for Distinguished Graduate Mentoring in the Humanities

    • These awards recognize tenured faculty who are outstanding mentors of doctoral students in the humanities, who support their intellectual, creative, scholarly, and professional growth, and foster a culture of intellectual engagement in which they thrive.
    • Tenured faculty members in the humanities, including scholars and creative artists, may be nominated.

    Lecturer Excellence Award

    • The Stamps School Award for Lecturer Excellence recognizes outstanding teaching contributions that engage and inspire the Stamps School community. Stamps School faculty with the title of Lecturer I, II, III, or IV will be eligible for the Stamps School Lecturer Award.
    • Nominees must have completed an interim review and not be on full layoff when nominated to be eligible.

    Lecturer Excellence in Inclusive Teaching Award

    • One lecturer is selected each year for the Lecturer Excellence in Inclusive Teaching (LEIT) Award, recognizing a demonstrated sustained record of excellence in inclusive teaching and learning practices and/or in service or other contribution to the inclusive teaching goals of the University.
    • The LEIT Award is open to all Lecturers, regardless of title or appointment effort.

    Master's Mentoring Award

    • The Rackham Master’s Mentoring Awards recognize faculty from any discipline who are outstanding mentors to master’s students, particularly for those in programs for which the master’s is the terminal degree.
    • Nominees may be a tenured or tenure-track faculty member, or a lecturer, clinical, or research faculty member.

    President’s Award for Distinguished Service in International Education

    • This award recognizes and celebrates the extraordinary efforts of our faculty and staff who advance international education for U-M students.
    • Nominees must be active U-M faculty or staff members. Up to two recipients are selected each year.

    President’s Award for National and State Leadership

    • This award honors an individual who has provided sustained, dedicated and influential leadership and service in major national or state capacities. The recipient will have contributed to the health, resilience and prosperity of our nation, state and society at large, as well as our ability to contribute to a just and equitable global environment beyond what is expected or required of them from their scholarship and/or research.
    • The award is open to tenure/tenure-track faculty, research faculty, clinical instructional faculty, librarians, archivists, and curators across all U-M campuses, schools, colleges and units.

    President's Award for Public Impact

    • This award, sponsored by the Office of the President, honors an individual who has offered their academic research and expertise in tangible service of a major public sector challenge, at the scale of the community, state, nation or world. The award recipient will have combated such threats in direct response to immediate and pressing issues in cooperation with other stakeholders, both governmental and non-governmental.
    • The award is open to tenure/tenure-track faculty, research faculty, clinical instructional faculty, librarians, archivists, and curators, across all U-M campuses, schools, colleges and units.

    Provost's Teaching Innovation Prize

    • The Provost's Teaching Innovation Prize seeks to encourage the dissemination of best practices by sharing promising innovations with faculty more broadly, recognizing faculty who have developed an innovative project, e.g., new approaches to creating inclusive classrooms, new uses of instructional technology, new ways to engage students in the learning process, new approaches to student collaboration, or new methods for replicating the advantages of a small course in a large lecture. This differs from other teaching prizes in that it honors original, specific innovations to improve student learning, not instructor's overall teaching excellence.
    • The award is open to tenured and tenure-track faculty, clinical instructional faculty, and lecturers who have ongoing teaching appointments on the University's Ann Arbor campus.

    R.D. Richards Memorial Faculty Award

    • The R.D. Richards Memorial Faculty Award recognizes a Stamps faculty member who has made outstanding contributions to the school during the past year in the areas of teaching, creative work, and service. The award was established by alumna Betsy Richards Horning in memory of her late husband Dr. Robert D. Richards, a graduate of the UM dental school.
    • The R.D. Richards Memorial Faculty Award is open to faculty with a service component as part of their appointment in the Stamps School of Art & Design; this includes tenured and tenure-track faculty, as well as those holding a Lecturer III or IV appointment with a service component. Nominations should be made by tenure/tenure-track faculty in the Stamps School of Art & Design.

    Rackham Distinguished Graduate Mentor Award

    • The Rackham Distinguished Graduate Mentoring Awards recognize tenured faculty from any discipline who are outstanding mentors of doctoral students, who support their intellectual, creative, scholarly, and professional growth, and foster a culture of intellectual engagement in which they thrive.
    • Tenured faculty members in any discipline may be nominated for these awards.

    Regents’ Award for Distinguished Public Service

    • The Regents’ Award for Distinguished Public Service seeks to publicize and reward the commitment to public service demonstrated by members of the University Senate. The public service activities will relate closely to teaching, research, and other scholarly activities that reflect the candidate’s professional and academic expertise. Meritorious activities will demonstrate benefit to society beyond one’s own career demands, and direct interaction with individuals outside the University is highly encouraged.
    • All members of the University Senate are eligible for consideration.

    Research Faculty Achievement Award

    • This award recognizes outstanding scholarly achievements, as represented by significant contributions to an academic field of study over time, a specific outstanding discovery, or the development of innovative technology or practice.
    • U-M faculty with at least a 60% University appointment at the rank of Research Associate Professor, Research Scientist or Associate Research Scientist are eligible; Tenured and tenure-track faculty are ineligible.

    Research Faculty Recognition Award

    • This award recognizes exceptional scholarly achievements, as evidenced by publications and/or other scholarly activities in any academic field of study.
    • U-M faculty with at least a 60% University appointment at the rank of Research Assistant Professor or Assistant Research Scientist are eligible; Tenured and tenure-track faculty are ineligible.

    Rogers Edge Award

    • The Rogers Edge Award is given to Stamps faculty and students to fund projects that engage edges - those areas where disciplinary fields overlap. The award was established in honor of Bryan Rogers (1941-2013), former dean of the Stamps School, whose curricular vision encompassed a new model for educating thinkers and makers, and whose own creative work navigated across and above disciplinary divides.

    • The Rogers Edge Award is open to tenure/tenure-track faculty and students in the Stamps School of Art & Design.

    Sarah Goddard Power Award

    • The Sarah Goddard Power Award recognizes significant achievement in contributing to the betterment of current challenges faced by women in one or all of the following areas: distinguished leadership, scholarship, or other activities related to their professional lives.
    • Nominees may be full-time faculty (including instructors, lecturers, primary researchers, librarians, and curators)or senior administrative staff.

    Shirley Verrett Award

    • The Award recognizes a faculty member whose work–teaching, performance, scholarship or service–supports the success of female artists from diverse cultural and racial backgrounds. The nominee must be within the “Art” field as broadly defined to include literary, visual, and performance arts (e.g. poetry, photography, painting, dance, theatre).
    • Available to all tenured/tenure-track faculty, clinical faculty as well as lecturers at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.

    University Librarian Achievement Award

    • Recipients will have demonstrated exceptional distinction reflected in active and innovative career achievements in library, archival or curatorial services.
    • Nominees must have a Primary Faculty appointment as Librarian, Archivist, or Curator.

    University Librarian Recognition Award

    • Recipients will have demonstrated active and innovative early-career achievement in library, archival or curatorial services.
    • Nominees must have a Primary Faculty appointment as Librarian, Archivist, or Curator with no more than eight years’ practice in the profession.
