Experimental Video: Modeling Space & Marking Time

Prerequisites: ANY ONE OF THE FOLLOWING: ARTDES 265: Intro to Video: Digital Cinematography & Editing, ARTDES 347: Cinematic Projection.

Description: This course is perfect for video experimentalists who also care about precision camerawork and editing. The overarching question of the course is: How can techniques from film and television be co-opted to serve the unconventional needs of fine artists and designers? Using iterative processes, students propose, work, and rework independent projects with an eye towards building a portfolio-ready body of work. Class assignments deepen knowledge gained in the Intro to Video course (ARTDES 265). This course focuses on advanced camera operations and editing processes including complex compositing, small-scale projection mapping, color grading, temporal manipulation, and the creation of custom camera rigs. Throughout the course, presentations and readings introduce students to exemplary video works that were produced for an array of purposes, including poetic expression, social critique, advocacy, spatial analysis, and time arts documentation.
