Textile Weaving: Analog to Digital

Prerequisites: ANY ONE OF THE FOLLOWING: ARTDES 208: Textile Design: Fiber Structures, ARTDES 200: Any 200 Level Studio.

Description: Textile Weaving introduces the possibilities of the digital Jacquard loom in the Weaving Studio. Invented thousands of years ago and used across cultures, a loom is a hand-operated or power-driven apparatus for weaving fabrics. This course introduces students to components and functions of looms, ranging from analog looms to the state-of-the-art digital Jacquard (the TC‑2) that translates digital files into woven material. Topics covered will range from formal issues of image composition to technical aspects of structural integrity, to discussions about relationships with technology, to surveys of weaving by artists across time and cultures. This course encourages experimentation and interdisciplinary exploration, with some seats reserved for students who have taken ARTDES 208: Fiber Structures, and some seats for students without weaving experience.
