Details

Credit Hours: 3
Semester: Winter 2025

Prerequisites: All OF THE FOLLOWING: ARTDES 200: Any 200 Level Studio.

Description: In this course students develop, design, and teach art projects in a wide variety of media to grade school students from a partner school or community art center. Students work in close collaborative teams to develop and produce vibrant art projects involving exploration, discovery, play, and problem solving that foster imaginative and cognitive development through creativity. To prepare and contextualize this work, readings and discussions address the perceptual and artistic developments that occur in childhood, community engagement, and the inequities of the U.S. educational system including the marginalization of creativity. The course begins with a period of preparation, then moves into scheduled work with our partner school or art center either on location or virtually. If class is held on location with a partner community, Students do not need a car; bus transportation is provided. Work for this class includes meetings with peer collaborators, reading, writing, materials exploration, communication/collaboration with young artists from our partner community, and digital/web-based documentation of projects.

Frequency: This course is typically offered in the fall term of every academic year, though scheduling may vary according to future term circumstances.
